If you have recently discovered that you are lactose intolerant, you don't have to give up pizza. Pizza without cheese can be just as flavorful and enjoyable as pizza with cheese. In fact, in Europe, it is common to find a few cheese-less pizzas on the menu when you go to a pizza restaurant. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you try your hand at making a cheese-less pizza for the first time. 

Focus On The Crust

When you take cheese out of the equation, the crust that you use becomes even more important. You will notice the flavor and crispness of the crust more on a cheese-less pizza. If you are not that experienced with making crust, you can purchase a pre-made crust at your grocery store, or you can even purchase pre-made pizza dough that you can roll out to form your own crust.

You can even add a little extra flavor to your dough by adding some of your favorite herbs and spices into the dough if you use pre-made dough or create your own dough. This will increase the flavor of your crust.

Use The Best Quality Sauce You Can Find

With a cheese-less pizza, the sauce you use will stand out more. The cheese will no longer take away or hide the flavor of the sauce, which is why you want to use the best quality sauce you can.

If you like tomato based sauces, you can purchase a pre-made sauce from your local grocery store, of you can purchase a few cans of crushed tomatoes and make your own sauce. If you make your own sauce, be sure to load it up with your favorite spices and herbs. 

Use A Baking Stone

For the best quality pizza, invest in a baking stone. A baking stone will cook your pizza more evenly and give it a nice, crispy texture. It will make the dough that you choose really stand out and turn into a great pizza.

Add Some Oils

Another great way to add some extra flavor to your pizza when you remove the cheese is to add some oils to your pizza. Use an infused extra-virgin olive oil on your pizza. Drizzle a chili infused or garlic infused olive oil on top of your pizza for some extra flavor and depth. 

Have Fun With The Toppings

Cheese-less pizzas are all about the toppings, so get creative and have some fun with the toppings. Here are a few great topping combinations you can try out on your first cheese-less pizza:

  • Thin slices of potato, thin slices of bacon, caramelized onions with a truffle-infused olive oil.
  • Roasted garlic and lemon paste topped with smoked salmon, chopped dill, and capers.
  • Pesto, grilled chicken, black olives, and roasted red peppers. 
  • Roasted butternut squash, caramelized onion, spinach leaves, and rosemary-infused olive oil.
  • Red onions, a variety of colored bell peppers, mushrooms, and pineapple. 

Just because you can't enjoy cheese anymore does not mean that you need to give up pizza. Instead, focus on making the other elements of the pizza the best that you can. Create a great crust, top it with a flavorful sauce, and pile on toppings that are tasty and appealing to you.
